The Anatomy of an Icon

by Tom

Dan Cederholm recently created two excellent sets of icons for use in web applications. Now, in his SimpleBits blog, he explains The Anatomy of an Icon and reveals his process for designing icons. As much as I enjoy posting tips specific to any rather narrow problem, I also really enjoy examining theory behind activities graphic designers and web programmers are engaged in every day.

This is a great article on what exactly goes into making an  icon a successful design i.e. one that engages a casual site visitor very quickly with the limited amount of screen real estate icons tend to occupy. It is a great jumping off point for a general classroom discussion as to icon design.
