Firefox Stops Animated Gifs

by Tom

Does a web page with animated gif’s make your head spin? Pressing the Escape key in Firefox Release will stop any animated images displayed in a web page.  I can’t even be sure when Firefox began to feature this functionality but all jokes aside it really is an excellent way to eliminate these pointless, distracting little bits of visual drivel. Look for other browsers to implement this feature shortly.

In fact, I’ll bet that before long you will have an option in Firefox preferences to completely disable the display animated gifs altogether. if you want to see it in action you can. Try it out here – Animation Factory

Clicking the stop icon in Internet Explorer has for a long time now stopped gif animations. I just wish it also worked with plugins like flash.

wow, finally doing what IE has done for years and years…

Go to the page about:config and locate the key image.animation_mode. set its value to ‘none’ to stop all animated gifs !

Firefox has a plugin for blocking flash. It shows a little icon where the flash would be, if you want to see what the flash is, just click it and it will play.

thanks for the tip.

Amazing!!! I’ve been trying to find out a way to stop animated gifs for ages!

Another cool add-on that stops javascript and flash is NoScript. You can easily block/unblock javascript etc with just two clicks.
