Luke Wroblewski has a great article about color selection called Natural Selections: Colors Found in Nature and Interface Design on Boxes and Arrows.
The article discusses pulling colors from nature to provide websites that are pleasing to the eye. Pure speculation on my part here but it seems one could make the case that we collectively have an affinity for natural color schemes and patterns with which we have been familiar our entire lives. At any rate, an article like this should serve to further stimulate Web designers’ sensitivity towards a holistic use of color, in other words using large swaths of colors that work well in conjunction with each other.
