Disable Background Music in Firefox

by Tom

Here is a short little article that will show you how to disable background music in Firefox by using the Adblock extension. I don’t know about you but I normally find background music such as this to be nothing but a distraction; not value added at all. I’m only now trying this Adblock extension out to see if it works as advertised but there is a definite value in the concept of extensions that work to reduce part of the user experience that is essentially forced upon users i.e. that isn’t part of the reason they visited a webpage.

Advertising is another terrific example of this, and I see ad blockers–generically speaking–being heavily adopted in the future.

Too bad it can’t turn off Flash audio. I don’t mind Flash, but I hate audio coming from my browser, especially since I listen to music 99% of the time I’m in front of my machine.

You would think that Firefox (all browsers actually) would have a simple “Mute” option.

18 months later, still no firefox mute.

The background music can be heard on the Internet Explorer, and Netscape by opting view like IE, but not on Mozilla Firefox.

I have not found why. I read somewhere, that Mozilla has no rights to play MIDI files, which are Microsoft property. Is it true?
