His arguments are compelling and the bottom line is that if you are setting links on your site to open new windows, so people supposedly will not leave your website, you should remember that if you irritate them they are even more likely to leave than they would otherwise be. As Turner says, ultimately compelling content is going to be the thing that engages your readers to engage with your site longer, and directing them to a new window is no shortcut to this sort of engagement.
