Google has just announced a new application that will help “speed up your web surfing” even when using broadband connections. Google states that:
“One mundane time-waster we all contend with, for example, is waiting for web pages to load. The tantalizing promise of a web page is only seconds away. But even on broadband, the wait’s too short to do something else – and just long enough to be irritating. Let’s face it, those seconds add up.”
BetaNews has a good article that discusses the Google App to Speed Up Web Surfing
To get the application you can vistit the Google Web Accelerator page.
Even without having taken a good look at this one, I can already hear the screams of Google trying to track more information out of our surfing habits – much like the claims recently around Google Desktop, Google Search Bar content replacement, ads in GMail, etc. This is absolutely a valid concern, but I guess that moving forward individuals are going to have to balance the value of the services Google provides to them against the likelihood that they are “paying” to use them by providing Google with some–it’s hard to say how much sometimes–information about themselves.

IT ROCKS. Google – amazing.
Well if Eric says it’s good, I’ll have to try it. Seriously, if you haven’t visited Eric’s site, he often recommends applications and utilities, and he is always (in my opinion) right on the mark with his reviews!
well i wont scream about it but i suppose, it is something to be concerned about.
They might have your email (gMail), your search history, this would give them your browsing history (to non-https sites), etc.. basically your entire internet experience is funnelled through one source.
now, I don’t fear google at all now -but you never know what might happen. someone else mentioned to me that if the board ever got annoyed with Larry and Sergie? they could fire them and then the “do no evil” mantra could be forgotten.
I dont care if they track my usage – but the single point of entry for all of my data is kind of concerning. How hard would it be for the data to be changed so that it appears as if it is coming from my requestor but is really false information?
I don’t think that would happen – but it definitely could.
