Rails Day 2005: T-15min
I am about to begin my participation in Rails Day 2005. Rails Day is a competition which gives teams of up to three developers 24 hours to build the best web app that they can using Ruby on Rails
There are 90 teams registered and 200 participants. I think our chances of winning some great prizes are pretty good. My team is made up of:
David Green – Dave is a former student who just completed his internship with my company where he built an awesome Ruby on Rails site for a Plant Classification and Identification site.
Angelsea (Gels) Saby – Gels is another former student who is currently working as a web designer/developer for a Victoria-based E-Learning company. I think she will be our ace in the can as she is a phenomenal designer. My guess is that most of the entrants will be geek groups full of coders, so having a top-notch graphic designer on our side will be a plus!
We have a loose idea of what we will be producing. As per the rules, we were allowed to create our concept ahead of time. We will be building a Folksonomy (tag) based recommendation system that will let users keep lists of the things they like or hate, and share them with others. For example, they might want to add their favorite movie, place for dinner, musical act, actor, wine – or maybe their least favorite. They can write reviews as well. Each entry will be tagged with keywords that will let others discover their tastes.
That’s about all we have, so we have lots to do over the next 24 hours!
I will attempt to post every hour to let you all know how we are progressing as well as my thoughts on developing with Ruby!
