System Rescue CD

System Rescue CD is a linux system on a bootable cdrom for repairing your system and your data after a crash. It also aims to provide an easy way to carry out admin tasks on your computer, such as creating and editing the partitions of the hard disk.

I actually carry a Knoppix Linux CD around with me regularly. Knoppix is a “live cd” distribution of Linux, not just a rescue disk. I’ve used it on a couple occassions where I needed to rescue data off a machine that wouldn’t boot. It automatically mounts hard drives in read mode, but since it has networking you can open an FTP connection and transfer the data.
