Interested in tracing the roots of your favorite programming language? The Tucows Developers’ Hangout has a list of three charts that diagram Programming Language Genealogies. The chart at http://www.levenez.com/lang/ is especially good as it is provided in large format PDF for printing on a plotter. Might look good (and geeky) on your cubicle wall! Really I defy anyone who is a programmer to not get drawn right into perusing the lineage of different programming tools you might have employed over the years.
Actually it would be a good idea for students especially to do this because it can be instructive to understand evolution of tools that you use and the relationship between seemingly disparate programming languages that might in fact turn out to have a common root.
