Java? It’s So Nineties

by Tom

Business week has some interesting analysis of Java and suggests that It’s So Nineties in terms of a tool for web development. They point to a number of competing technologies like LAMP, Rails and .NET as serious tools in the web arena. I normally don’t think too much of mainstream media publications on technology but sometimes an indication of the way that laymen might perceive the importance of different computer languages can reflect what middle management might choose to adopt for future large-scale commercial projects.

Also as a indication of the zeitgeist relative to something as basic as web development can be instructive for professionals in the trenches, as to where future job opportunities might exist.

.NET can do what Java can do in 1 month in 1 week.
Rails can do what .NET can do in 1 week in 1 day.

…and ColdFusion can fix what rails did wrong after your site made enough money from the prototype to make it scalable :-)

LAMP… Linux Apache mySQL and Perl… the Linux, Apache, and mySQL part is fine – but Perl is crazy old school nineties.

You must be oldschool nineties yourself to think Perl while it’s PHP in LAMP ;-)
