Daring Fireball: Using .htaccess Redirection to Standardize Web Server Addresses

by Tom Mullaly on April 24, 2009

John Gruber has a great article about Using .htaccess Redirection to Standardize Web Server Addresses. .htaccess files are actually quite easy to work with, and if you have a website, you should be able to implement many of these techniques to provide better URI’s to your users. In fact, even if you have a single WordPress blog you should have a little bit of knowledge about how to perform 301- redirects for instance, as a way of guiding both your users and search engine crawlers to a page whose name has changed, for whatever reason. I think the term htaccess puts a lot of people off but trust me, conceptually it’s not that difficult to understand and not surprisingly Gruber does a great job of helping here.
