Run Safari on Windows

by Tom

(Note: this post isn’t strictly about running the Safari browser on Windows, but instead introduces a way that practically speaking will be handiest for seeing how your pages render in Safari while you are running Windows.)

GetWebKit! is a new browser for Windows that is based on WebKit, the same rendering engine that is used by Safari. The browser you install is named “Swift” and has been released as an alpha product. The interface is very bare-bones, but it looks like it could be a very useful tool to at least test how your pages might render on a Mac! Consider this your browser testing tech tip of the day from Digital Media Minute.

Excellent! This will be a huge benefit for development. Any word on how close this really comes to safari on a mac?

I just downloaded it and it looks fairly good. There seems to be some problems rendering fonts as white when they should be black. But otherwise some java scripts to sort a table, and css to highlight a table which do not work in IE showed up ok.

although this is still very beta i can confirm that all of the javascript i tested ran fine… strangely i couldn’t get the cute thing to do a post-request…

According to me this product isn’t in alpha phase yet.
I can’t open any website (I can’t even type in the address bar) and the app craches when I close the last tab.

Allthough I’m not very impressed by Safaris rendering engine, I like the initiative of porting webkit to Windows. Makes testing a bit more comfortable.

This is going to make a huge difference. I am having some crazy problems with safari not firing events until the mouse moves and that sort of thing.

Sorry but I think this project is now officially history :-( Thanks for trying, though.

(writing from my Safari 3 beta now also available on Windows)
