StartupSound is a prefPane plugin for OSX that allows you to control the volume of the Mac startup sound. You can make it quieter, louder (not sure why) or silent. OK this is not going to be a tip that changes your life but how many times have you started up OS X and got a jolt you didn’t need because the profoundly profound chord that plays at start-up was about 50 dB too loud? I am not at all surprised that there’s a way to do this easily but who has time to go looking for these things? Anyway just remember StartupSound and you won’t have to.
