IE6 and IE7 Running on a Single Machine

by Tom

Microsoft is feeling charitable? They recently announced that anyone can have IE6 and IE7 Running on a Single Machine through an offer that allows you to download a free Virtual PC image of Windows XP with IE6. Microsoft Virtual PC is free virtualization software that allows you to run multiple Operating Systems (Windows, Linux or Unix) while in Windows XP. This looks to be a great option for cross-browser testing!  I would just remind every one that there are a lot of other options out there for testing the look and functionality of the Web age on a wide variety of browsers and versions of browsers all at once, but still this is a nice offering from the fine folks at Redmond.

If you found this helpful or interesting, please share it!

It’s a shame this VPC image will expire on 04/01/2007.

I think this is crazy

for any other browser (or application) running on os/x or linux would just require a seperate directory to run a different version of 99% of the application..

You need to run a virtual OS just to run a html viewer .. wtf

Evert – I have to agree with you. WFT! However this is just the way it is when working with MS products sometimes. It’s good to know that MS is aware of the problems they have caused by integrating the browser so closely into the OS. Even better to know that they have made this option available. And look at the bright side… Maybe by installing Virtual PC will enable more Windows developers to spin up a Linux OS on a save virtualized host!

Hi,
You all don’t need VPC for running IE6 and IE7 on the same machine just install IE7 and then go to %WINDOWS%/ie7 there is a file “iexplore.exe” if you right click it you’ll see in the version tab that is the IE6. Now you can send to desktop as a shortcut and use it. You’ll get IE6 and IE7 on a single machine.;)

Great.

It’s working :)

I need to know if I can have both IE 6 and 7, on the same machine. But run one or the other as I feel. Cause some work applications take only IE 6, and others take IE 7.
