The iPhone Video Booster

The guys from OWLE are trying to get the Qik app in the App Store and would like you to help them. It’s a very cool live video app but it’s not their app, so why is Harold from this clip giving us a demo?

In the middle of this clip they unhook the iPhone (on which it’s being filmed) from a piece of hardware called the OWLE that is your basic super iPhone Video booster: a mount to steady the frame, that also holds a larger lens, lighting, a mic, etc. It’s a platform extension, for video capability that’s certainly good enough and in the hands of enough people to warrant such a thing. Qik is available now for use on other platforms, but it sounds like more ATT foot-dragging (a la You Tube and Skype resistance) could pose a threat to widespread adoption of Harold’s little gem of an iphone booster. I may be wrong, but I say Apple knows ah, perfectly well that it’s in the business of encouraging use of iPhone functionality through apps, and that this restriction is lifted shortly, one way or the other.

I know most people don’t have an iPhone, and some people think they’re bad on some level….. At any rate, this clip clarifies how strong the pull is for tech platforms whose function and form can be tweaked to transform devices in ways that the the original creators of the device did not foresee. A generation or three ago, Harold would have been amplifying the performance of his hot rod instead of his video booster. It’s exactly the same impulse: to get more out of something by injecting your own creativity into it. I just can’t believe it’s happening with an Apple product.

BTW, have you made some time to build iPhone apps for yourself yet?
