I was surprised to see that criminal prosecution for theft of a domain name is happening for the first time ever in the US, in New Jersey. Here’s a fascinating article on the principals in this case, including an NBA basketball player, explaining also why unfortunately you have little legal recourse (outside of California at the moment) if you are a victim of domain name theft. Interestingly, GoDaddy is also named as a defendant. The legal system has been slow, it seems, to handle this kind of internet crime. As many people who are involved nowadays in buying and selling domain names I would hope that our legislators get up to speed on the topic in a hurry.
