Jobs On Nano, Etc.

by Tom

Short synopsis of an interview with Steve Jobs from the NYT.
Highlights:
*A camera in the Nano but not the touch? Basically Apple decided to reduce the price and keep it stripped down. They see iPod Touch as a game machine and the ‘lowest-cost way to the App Store’. Wow. Remember Jobs saying that there would be no third-party apps?
*Why video but no still camera in the new Nano? Video recording sensors are extremely thin nowadays-thin enough to fit into the Nano. Sensors for hi-res still shots are way too thick to fit in a Nano-sized enclosure, especially if they are autofocus capable.
*Dedicated devices (such as the Kindle) vs. general purpose devices: Jobs comes down on the side of general purpose device. He doesn’t think Amazon is selling enough Kindles to justify changing Apple’s strategy regarding the presumed ‘iTablet’. Having found huge success with the App Store, it seems like apple is locked into accommodating the whole range of apps in the new device. Again, it sounds like a guy who got App Store religion. I guess moving 1.5 billion apps will do that.
