RIAs As Multimedia Apps
From James Ward, a nice little discussion about sensitivity that developers should have to the media on which their RIAs will run. The point is that Rich Internet Application doesn’t mean ‘running only within a browser’. To illustrate, Ward shares a Flex widget that also contains the option of installing it on the desktop, as well as emailing it as a PDF containing the app. Often code re-use between the different versions is possible, but not always.
Ward concludes:
Either way it’s important to architect our back ends such that they are agnostic to the front end. This is one of the ways RIA and mobile app development have changed the way we build software. It’s a good thing and we should embrace it.
Nice point, and slick little widget btw.
