From some real smart folks at Cambridge University’s Engineering Department, check out this so-called ‘on-line rapid model acquisition system’, called ProFORMA, that quickly regenerates digital 3-D copies/models of real objects in very near real time, using a video camera as the data collection device. Having been involved in modeling 3-D objects in my other career for a couple of decades I find this 3-D model creation to be absolutely breathtaking. It is incredibly fast and though I can’t be sure just how accurate this technology is in rendering objects to a given scale–remember how important that is in engineering applications–it’s still really, really impressive.
