Firefox 0.9 Released

Mozilla.org has officially launched Firefox 0.9! This latest version sports a number of new features and fixes including:

  • Extension Manager
  • Theme Manager
  • Data Migration/Import
  • New Visual Theme for Windows and Linux
  • Better Bookmarks
  • Better Search
  • Smaller Download
  • Online Help
  • Numerous bug fixes and incremental improvements
  • Faster page load speed

A word of caution, do not install this version over any previous versions of Firefox. Either uninstall previous versions or install Firefox 0.9 to a different folder.

If you choose the uninstall route, I would suggest that you backup your profile using a small utility called MozBackup. You should also make note of any Extensions and Search Plugins that you have installed as those seem to be removed when you install 0.9

I wouldn’t recommend using MozBackup before installing 0.9. I tried it and I did not work – just lost all my bookmarks – doh!

Uninstall it first.. I just learned the hard way. Thanks to bookmark backups I am back in business.

I don’t suggest the transition. I feel that 0.8 is much less buggy. Certain aspects of 0.9 are difficult to find and old bugs from the days of Netscape 6.2 have reared their heads. I can see why certain users would upgrade, but I don’t feel that the bugs are worth the update.
