Daring Fireball has a very thoughtful article that sheds more light on Dashboard vs. Konfabulator. Dashboard is due to be included in the next version of OSX, and from the preview given at WWDC it appears to be much like Konfabulator. The article from Daring Fireball suggests that the idea of a “widget” is nothing new and dates back as early as 1984 on the original Mac operating system.
