Underline Text in Adobe Illustrator

Saturday, May 22nd, 2004

There is a nice tutorial at Stopdesign.com that shows how to Underline Text in Adobe Illustrator. As many designers are now using Illustrator to create comps for their designs, it seems obvious that one would want to place underlines with text to show what hyperlinks would look like.

I don’t use Illustrator myself, but from the post it sounds like the inability to underline is a major flaw in Illustrator’s ability to handle text.

What is RSS/XML/Atom/Syndication?

Friday, May 21st, 2004

Dave Shea at mezzoblue offers up a great article that answers the question – What is RSS/XML/Atom/Syndication?

RSS and Atom combined with a news aggregator (Feed Demon is the one I use) has changed the way I use the Internet. If you’re not already using RSS/Atom, I would recommend reading Dave’s article, then going out and getting your self an aggregator!

Thursday, May 20th, 2004

When sizing text using CSS, the comfortable choice is usually the predictable pixel absolute measurment. Pixels however is not the best choice due to the fact that an element styled with pixels cannot be made larger using IE and thus causing some serious accesibility issues.

How to size text using ems will introduce and help you use the prefered way to size text.

krutch.ca

Tuesday, May 18th, 2004

I’ve been meaning to do this for a few weeks now, so here it goes. My students recently finished a major project class, where they were required to produce a large scale, professional quality website. Each student was required to produce 400 hours worth of work. Over the next few weeks, I am going to showcase their work – some of it is complete and some is complete but missing substantial content.

This week I will be featuring a site named Krutch that is dedicated to the pursuit of extreme sports on Vancouver Island, British Columbia.

This site is a dynamic content management system, built from the ground up (all original code) using JSP, JSTL, mySQL, Flash, XHTML, JavaScript and CSS. There are lots of great images, animations and illustrations. For the most part the site is completely standards compliant and work across both platforms and browsers (the authors had to use a simple 2 column table on one page to hold the design together – but that’s it for tables!)

The site was designed and code by a group of four very talented women. Here is a small quote from the About page on the site:

In all reality folks, we’re really just a gang of four web developers/nerds from Nanaimo. More specifically, a snowboarder, a longboarder, an HTML architect, and a database Queen. Krutch was a collaborative effort on all our parts, and, after months of research and development, it’s finally here. We’re non-profit, we’re a great resource, and we wanted to give some recognition to all the boarders out here on Vancouver Island – seasoned pros and beginners alike.

I hope you enjoy this site and if you like the work of this group, you can view their individual portfolios at:
