MacMinute has just released some photos from Apple’s World Wide Developers Conference that suggests Apple is taking aim at Microsoft’s Longhorn operating system. A number of posters (which can be viewed at MacMinute) boast titles such as:
At tomorrow’s keynote, Steve Jobs will be previewing “Tiger” the latest cat in the OSX family.
So now that I have an active Gmail account, I’m starting to notice a bunch of nice utilities to help integrate the new web-based mail service into my daily workflow.
The following two utilities will make mailto: links that are embedded in web pages open in the Gmail compose page:
The Bluetooth To Internet Utility by GooseSoft will allow you to share your Internet connection with up to 7 other users using your Bluetooth enabled Mac. I guess you know it had to happen – Gmail invites are being sold on E-Bay. For less than $5.00 people are willing to sell their Gmail invites on the popular auction service. The ads promote getting a Gmail account early so that you can get an address that contains your actual name – and maybe this makes it worth purchasing an account as early as you can. For example, I have very few people in my address book that use Hotmail and don’t have a number after their e-mail address (ie. Pookie231@hotmail.com).
Maukie is a really cool cat made with Macromedia Flash. You can interact with her and make her purr, scratch, and meow. The animation is very well done and picks up on many subtle nuances of the feline species.
gExodus is a graphical Gmail import tool. It provides a nice GUI that allows you to import mbox files which is the common mail storage format used by Mozilla Mail and Thunderbird. Users of email clients which don’t use the mbox format (such as Outlook Express and Outlook) can convert their emails into the mbox format by importing them into a Mozilla client of their choice.
I’ve got three GMail invites to give away. Leave a comment here with your email address and I’ll send one to the first three.
I’ve been using GMail for a week now (thanks to Johnny Amos for giving me his invite) and I am really liking it. I particularly like the fact that instead of organizing emails in folders, GMail lets you apply labels to an email message. Think of lables as being categories. You can apply more than one label to an email which gives you the ability of sub-categorizing emails.
