Official Google Gmail Notifier

Friday, August 20th, 2004

Gmail Notifier from Google is the official Gmail Notifier for Windows. There have been some third party attempts at this, but are unsupported by Google and against the terms of the Gmail Beta terms. The installer not only installs a notifier, but will also make mailto: links open in Gmail.

Gmail Tricks and Tidbits

Thursday, July 15th, 2004

Got a Gmail account? AdamLasnik dishes out a few interesting tricks and tidbits.

One of my favorites is:

Gmail supports plus addressing, which means that if your address is maryhadda@gmail.com, you can receive e-mail at maryhadda+littlelamb@gmail.com or maryhadda+longaddress@gmail.com, etc. Why is this useful? Well, Mary (or you!) could use one, er, I’ll call it a plussing, for mailing lists (maryhadda+lists), and another for shopping online (maryhadda+shopping) and so on, and then create filters to put useful labels on the different types of mail.

Gmail and Fuzzy Whitelisting

Wednesday, July 7th, 2004

Jason Kottke has an interesting take on Gmail and fuzzy whitelisting. Just maybe he suggests…

wouldn’t it be fun if the real reason that Google is distributing accounts the way they are is to build whitelisting into their system?

Gmail as an Online Backup System

Thursday, July 1st, 2004

Ilia Alshanetsky has created a nice PHP script that will allow you to use your Gmail Account as an Online Backup System . Note that this is not a standalone application – it is a script that requires that you have a the ability to run PHP on you system (most commonly done through a web server). The script is a little bit rough, but it certainly demonstrates a very cool use for 1GB of free storage!

Get mailto: Links to Open in GMail

Sunday, June 27th, 2004

So now that I have an active Gmail account, I’m starting to notice a bunch of nice utilities to help integrate the new web-based mail service into my daily workflow.

The following two utilities will make mailto: links that are embedded in web pages open in the Gmail compose page:

Gmail Invites on EBay

Friday, June 25th, 2004

I guess you know it had to happen – Gmail invites are being sold on E-Bay. For less than $5.00 people are willing to sell their Gmail invites on the popular auction service. The ads promote getting a Gmail account early so that you can get an address that contains your actual name – and maybe this makes it worth purchasing an account as early as you can. For example, I have very few people in my address book that use Hotmail and don’t have a number after their e-mail address (ie. Pookie231@hotmail.com).

Graphical Gmail Import Tool

Thursday, June 24th, 2004

gExodus is a graphical Gmail import tool. It provides a nice GUI that allows you to import mbox files which is the common mail storage format used by Mozilla Mail and Thunderbird. Users of email clients which don’t use the mbox format (such as Outlook Express and Outlook) can convert their emails into the mbox format by importing them into a Mozilla client of their choice.

GMail Invites

Wednesday, June 23rd, 2004

I’ve got three GMail invites to give away. Leave a comment here with your email address and I’ll send one to the first three.

I’ve been using GMail for a week now (thanks to Johnny Amos for giving me his invite) and I am really liking it. I particularly like the fact that instead of organizing emails in folders, GMail lets you apply labels to an email message. Think of lables as being categories. You can apply more than one label to an email which gives you the ability of sub-categorizing emails.
