I often have a difficult time explaining exactly what content tagging is, and even when I do explain it really well, most people have a hard time understanding what it’s inherant benefis are. Linda Zimmer has come to the rescue with a nice article titled – Tagging: What is it Good For?
Hewlet Packard has released a nice whitepaper titled The Structure of Collaborative Tagging Systems (link to PDF). The research by the authors found that:
They discovered
regularities in user activity, tag frequencies, kinds of tags
used, bursts of popularity in bookmarking and a remarkable
stability in the relative proportions of tags within a given
URI.
